Trip at a Glance
The vibe: If you love the quaint coastal towns of Cape Cod, the breezy northern summers of Door County, Wisconsin, and the rolling vineyards of the Finger Lakes, try a trip that blends charming lake towns with blossoming vineyards and classic American fun — without the crowds.
Best for: Couples, friends or families looking for a relaxed, aesthetic-driven getaway that mixes food and wine with the great outdoors
Don't miss:
- The quaint downtown and LGBTQ+ culture of Saugatuck
- The windmills and flowers of Holland during the Tulip Time Festival
- Fat-tire biking through the sand at Saugatuck Dunes State Park or Riley Woods
- A lakeside sunset from the Grand Haven lighthouses and pier
Best seasons: Spring (for the tulips and milder weather) and summer (for classic lake activities). Visit in the shoulder season (late spring or early fall) to enjoy the best weather with fewer crowds and more affordable accommodations.

Advice from a Local
Matthew Millar is a two-time James Beard semifinalist and the co-owner of The Southerner in Saugatuck and Iggy's in Fennville, where he lives with his wife.
Perfect day off: At the beach and hiking in the dunes. Lake Michigan and the surrounding dunes are spectacular year-round.
Favorite coffee shop: My friend Missy Corey's restaurant, Pennyroyal. Their espresso and pastries are fantastic!
Favorite places to shop: In Saugatuck, some local favorites are Kindel & Co. and Landsharks, and in Fennville, I love the collection of local artists on offer at The Root.
Best lunch spots: Pennyroyal for a chef-driven experience, Farmhouse for great grab-and-go, and The Blue Goose in Fennville for a good, old-fashioned diner.
Best spot to take visitors: The beach! Followed by cocktails at The Southerner.
Best spot for a fun night out: The What Not Inn for music on Sunday or Monday nights.
