Family Adventures: The Best California Road Trips for Kids and Parents Alike

Enjoying one of their family’s best California road trips, two parents hold their happy young son and daughter on a beach.

Dreaming of the perfect family road trip with the right mix of exciting adventures and opportunities to unwind? Then, a trip to California should be on your agenda. The Golden State isn’t all amusement parks and movie stars. It’s home to some of the most breathtaking national parks and coastal scenes that can ignite kids' curiosity and potentially even prompt them to put down their tablets.

Since you’re a caregiver, we know you already have a full plate. That’s why we’ve gone ahead and created a list of kid-friendly stops that will lead to one of your family’s best California road trips so your energy can be spent focusing on creating those core memories together.

Why Plan a Family Road Trip in California?

When it comes to a state that’s easy to traverse with kids, it doesn’t get much better than California. A few bustling cities made our list, but most destinations are quaint, safe and uncrowded towns where you can easily push a stroller down the sidewalk or have peace of mind letting little ones walk a few steps ahead of you. Plus, the mild weather equates to outdoor activities being on the table almost year-round. That means kids have fewer demands to use their “inside voices,” which everyone tends to appreciate.

Young children will love playing on the sandy beaches, while active kids can get their energy out roller-skating on boardwalks or climbing trees in national parks. Teens can explore their curiosity about fashion and entertainment in star-studded Los Angeles or the eclectic streets of San Francisco. And we haven’t even touched on the food yet.

California is a culinary dream known for making healthy food delicious so you can expand your kids’ palates while feeling good about what you’re feeding them. The adults can indulge a little, too, thanks to the numerous wineries that welcome guests under 21. There truly is something for everyone in California, so pack your sunglasses and an appetite for avocados, and let’s go!

How to Plan Kid-Friendly Trips in California

One of the best parts about California road trips is that there are so many direct flights from all over the country to two airports that make the perfect starting point for your adventure: Los Angeles International Airport and San Francisco International Airport. Most of the destinations on our list are never more than half a day’s drive from either of these airports.

If efficiency is your priority, the I-5 and the US-101 can take you almost the entire way from Los Angeles to San Francisco. However, if you're after a little spontaneity and lots of “Oooh, can we pull over and see that?” moments, we recommend taking the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). The PCH  almost connects Southern California to Northern California and is a mecca of well-known and hidden gems ranging from educational to mesmerizing.

Be sure to pack:

  • Bathing suits for the beaches where you’ll want to stop and take a dip
  • Walking/hiking shoes for the countless enticing treks along the coast
  • Snacks + water because some long stretches of the PCH don’t have service stations
  • A CA state map because the PCH — while charming — has its cell service dead zones, so it’s a good idea to have a backup plan if your GPS app cuts out

Areas Worth Visiting on Your Family CA Road Trip

You won’t believe how much variety you’ll experience during your road trip to California. Sure, you’ll stay in one state the whole time, but by the end, you’ll feel like you traveled through different worlds. Every stretch of this coastal state offers its own flavors, landscapes and attractions.

Northern California Itinerary

Fun in the sun, city life and artsy charm are all just a few hours apart in Northern California. From famous resort towns to farmland, NorCal has so much to discover.

  • Lake Tahoe. Visit the mountainous region of Lake Tahoe for sunbathing and swimming or exceptional skiing (depending on the time of year). With miles of trails and shores to explore, Lake Tahoe is an active family’s dream destination.

Next, head to Sacramento. Drive time: 2 hours and 20 minutes
  • Sacramento. You can’t visit California without visiting the state capital. As a major player in Cali agriculture, Sacramento is known for its fresh farmer’s markets — just one of the many attractions in this historic city that’s a short drive from San Francisco.

Next, you’re off to San Francisco. Drive time: 1 hour and 30 minutes
  • San Francisco. Find fashion, food and culture in the buzzing city of San Francisco. You can eat every type of cuisine here, from fresh farm-to-table to Mission-style burritos, top-notch Italian, authentic Asian food and more. For an educational experience, visit enriching museums like the Exploratorium, dedicated to science, technology and arts, or the Children’s Creativity Museum, a hands-on arts and science experience that will spark little one’s curiosities. Love to shop? Head over to Union Square to explore the multi-story locations of your favorite chain stores, explore Pier 39 for souvenirs and craft gifts with a waterfront view, or check out Hayes Street, recently named one of the “coolest streets in the world” where you can peruse charming shops with curated selections.

Next, cruise down to Santa Cruz. Drive time: 1 hour and 20 minutes
  • Santa Cruz. This fun and funky collegiate town might inspire high school-aged kids to study for the SATs. Meanwhile, the roller coasters and games on the famous Santa Cruz boardwalk should keep younger kids entertained.

Keep heading south to explore Big Sur on the beautiful central coast. Drive time: 3 hours

Central Coast Itinerary

Looking for a laid-back vibe and breathtaking scenery? The Central Coast has it all. Whether it’s relaxed beach days you’re after or small-town charm, you’ll find it in the middle section of Cali.

  • Big Sur. With its famous redwood trees and cliffside views of the ocean, Big Sur is a must-see for nature lovers. Get ready to pull over for plenty of photo opportunities.

Now you’re off to Morro Bay. Drive time: 3 hours
  • Morro Bay. After a visit to Morro Bay, your kids can brag to their friends that they (sort of) visited a volcano. Morro Bay is home to Morro Rock, a massive volcanic structure on the shores of the Pacific. Stroll the charming waterfront town while snapping pics of the natural wonder.

Next, you’re a short drive from San Luis Obispo. Drive time: 20 minutes
  • San Luis Obispo. With a bustling downtown area full of boutiques and restaurants, the quirky Madonna Inn, and welcoming wineries, San Luis Obispo (known by locals as SLO) is the perfect midway stop between Santa Barbara and Morro Bay.

The next stop is Santa Barbara. Drive time: 1 hour and 45 minutes
  • Santa Barbara. A second home for many Los Angeles celebrities, Santa Barbara offers a peaceful beach town life with just the right amount of city feel. Enjoy a tandem bike ride near the pier, go shopping downtown or sip an outdoor beverage at the lively breweries in the Funk Zone. There are so many ways to enjoy a road trip through Santa Barbara.

Time to explore the southern part of the state, starting with L.A. Drive time: 2 hours and 15 minutes

Southern California Itinerary

With world-famous beaches, celebrity-studded neighborhoods and backdrops that have made it into some of your favorite movies and TV shows, Southern California offers non-stop excitement when you want it, and some relaxing getaways when you don’t.

  • Los Angeles. Whether you take a tour of celebrity homes in Beverly Hills, grab a bite in Koreatown or stroll down the Venice Beach boardwalk, Los Angeles is home to many world-famous tourist destinations. (Pro tip: Consider making your way with paper road maps instead of a phone — LA is fun, but it can get so crowded that it hinders cell service).

Next you’re off to Laguna Beach. Drive time: 1 hour and 15 minutes
  • Laguna Beach. If it’s spacious, white sandy beaches, mind-blowing mansions and whimsical art galleries you’re looking for, Laguna Beach is the place to go. The Los Angeles & Orange County Thomas Guide can help you find the hidden gems in this treasure trove.

Keep heading south to San Diego. Drive time: 1 hour and 30 minutes
  • San Diego. Surf’s up! Don’t miss the seafront city of San Diego for some of the best waves, tacos and vibes in SoCal. San Diego, like San Francisco, has unique neighborhoods around every corner, each with their own charm and culture.

Next you’re headed to the desert region of Palm Springs. Drive time: two hours and 15 minutes
  • Palm Springs. The other home-away-from-home for the LA elite, Palm Springs is just a short drive from LAX and perfect for a lazy vacation. With tons of affordable rental homes that have on-site pools, your kids can take a dip while you sneak out for a round of golf.

Finally, escape to the mountains of Big Bear. Drive time: 1 hour and 45 minutes
  • Big Bear. If you don’t want to travel as north as Lake Tahoe, Big Bear is an affordable and accessible alternative, just a couple hours' drive from Los Angeles. Like Lake Tahoe, it offers water activities during warm months and skiing in the winter.

Family-Friendly Attractions in Northern California

1. Enjoy a Winter Mountain (or Summer Lake!) Getaway to Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is one of those special places that’s a joy to visit any time of year, as every season brings beautiful foliage and offers unique, family-friendly activities. It’s a world-renowned skiing destination in the winter, with well-maintained slopes accessible through adorable ski villages and upscale resorts. And in the warmer months, you can go boating, inner tubing, kayaking and swimming in the lake's clear blue waters. It’s got something for everyone all year long.

Next, you’ll head to Mendocino. Drive time: 5 hours and 45 minutes

2. Get Active with Family-Friendly Outdoor Adventures in Mendocino

If you’re craving quiet time, visit Mendocino, a picturesque coastal town off the PCH with a population of fewer than 1,000 permanent residents. It might be small, but the opportunities for adventure are aplenty. Stroll the many glass-bottom beaches, where you can collect colorful, smooth glass pieces to put in a jar or turn into jewelry. Enjoy the oceanfront botanical gardens or hike the cliffside trails of the Mendocino State Park. No matter how you choose to spend your time here, we’re sure your family will enjoy the peaceful and quaint Mendocino Village.

Now it’s off to Sonoma County. Drive time: 3 hours

3. Go on Safari in Sonoma County

Traveling to the continent of Africa might involve more passport renewals and vaccinations than you’re up for. Fortunately, you can have an authentic African safari experience in California’s wine country of Sonoma County.  Safari West is a wildlife sanctuary that’s home to over 900 animals from 90 species living on its 400 acres. You and your family can book an overnight stay in one of the private tents, each of which has a private deck and bathroom.

We’re off to Santa Cruz. Drive time: 3 hours

4. Live the Beach and Boardwalk Dream on the Santa Cruz Wharf

Santa Cruz is an eclectic, artsy seaside community with numerous family-fun activities. A visit to the Santa Cruz boardwalk should be at the top of your list. Natural Bridges State Park offers long stretches of clean beach and even has a lifeguard on duty so you can breathe easy while your little ones explore.

Next on the itinerary is Monterey Bay. Drive time: 1 hour

5. Marvel at Marine Life at Monterey Bay Aquarium

Educate your young ones on the importance of preserving marine life with a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. You’re ready for Big Sur next. Drive time: 45 minutes

Family-Friendly Attractions on the Central Coast

6. Check Out Coastal Mansions in Big Sur

While you make your way up north, take the scenic route through Big Sur and hop on the 17-mile drive. It’s a short but worthwhile detour off the CA-1 that will take you past some of the most stunning beachfront properties and golf courses in the affluent neighborhoods of Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove. Just don’t blame us if your kids start asking, “Why don’t we live in a house like  that one?”

Now it’s off to Solvang. Drive time: 4 hours

7. Hit the Trails with Family Horseback Riding in Solvang

About a 45-minute drive north and inland from Santa Barbara is Solvang, a town featuring authentic Danish culture. Book a stay at the Alisal Guest Ranch & Resort, where you and your kids can ride horseback on a 10,000-acre active cattle ranch. The resort offers trails and experiences for every level of rider, from beginners to advanced equestrians.

Most spots have outdoor areas for kids to play and food trucks to accompany your beverages.

Finally, you’ll make your way to Los Angeles. Drive time: 1 hour and 45 minutes

Some of the best CA road trips include stops at all of the studios, but if you only have time for two, here are our recommendations.

9. Enjoy an Interactive Warner Brothers Tour

Hop on a shuttle and cruise around one of the busiest working lots in Hollywood! You’ll see a mixture of current, active sets and classic ones, including “Friends,” “Gilmore Girls” and “Batman.” You never know what star might be walking through on their way to film something, so tell everyone in your family to keep their eyes peeled.

Next up is Catalina Island. Ferry time: 60 minutes to 90 minutes (depending on which port you leave from)

12. Explore the Secluded Beauty of Catalina Island by Golf Cart

You’ll actually ditch your car for this first stop because only residents and taxi services are allowed to have vehicles on the idyllic island of Catalina (which is part of its charm). Catch the  ferry to Catalina Island from San Pedro, Long Beach or Dana Point and zip over to this popular destination just 22 miles off the coast of Southern California. You can cover the charming town center, Avalon, by foot, or hop on a golf cart and cruise over to Two Harbors, the rustic village roughly 200 people call home. If your crew is into wildlife, you might also consider going on a bison expedition tour to catch the herd living on the island. No matter what adventure you choose, Catalina is sure to charm your entire family.

Now you’re back to the mainland, off to Legoland. Travel time: the ferry ride is 45 to 90 minutes (depending on which port you head to)

13. Build Unforgettable Memories at Legoland

If your young explorers play with Legos at home, you can’t miss a trip to the toy’s namesake amusement park. Designed to thrill kids ages 2 through 12, Legoland has more than 60 Lego-themed rides, as well as a rotating roster of family-friendly shows and other attractions like Lego-based sculptures and towers. You can quite literally build memories that your family will never forget.

Finally, you’ll end your trip in San Diego. Drive time: 35 minutes

14. Gaze at the Animals at the World-Famous San Diego Zoo

Treat the little animal lovers in your life to an outing at the San Diego Zoo. It’s the most visited zoo in the United States, and with more than 12,000 animals to check out, it’s easy to see why. Don’t skip a ride on the Skyfari Aerial Tram. This airborne tram is included in your admission and gives a bird’s eye view of parts of the park, traveling from the entrance all the way to the back of the zoo. Everyone in the family can catch a view that piques their interest!

Discover the Unique and Breathtaking Parks Throughout the State

If you’re interested in a more nature-inspired experience for your family, you may want to focus on the “Parks” that are sprinkled throughout the state. Whether you’re looking to instill a love for our planet in your kids or encourage an already blossoming appreciation for Mother Earth, don’t miss these epic parks that will take the whole family’s breath away. Be prepared, though — sometimes epic destinations call for epic drive times. So, to help provide entertainment during the car rides, pack along some  activity books your kiddos will love!

15. Camp Under the World’s Tallest Trees at Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park

Start in the northern part of the state with Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, which is dedicated to the preservation of redwood trees. Situated alongside Smith River, it also boasts plenty of beaches and swimming holes to cool off after a day spent hiking the surrounding wooded areas.

Head south to the popular Yosemite National Park. Drive time: 9 hours and 45 minutes

16. Explore the Epic Landscapes of Yosemite National Park

Yosemite is one of the most popular national parks in California. Home to a diverse array of scenery and landscapes, from waterfalls and rivers to granite domes and alpines, it’s no wonder some travelers dedicate several days to this park. Continue onward to Sequoia National Park. Drive time: 2 hours and 45 minutes

17. Roam the Land of Giants at Sequoia National Park

Get ready for a lot of “Oohs” and “Aahs” at this park, which is home to some of the largest trees in the world. In fact, the largest tree in the world sits here — the General Sherman Tree, which occupies 52,508 cubic feet of space.

For a total change of scenery, head to Death Valley National Park. Drive time: 4 hours and 30 minutes

18. Visit the Expansive Sand Dunes at Death Valley National Park

Don’t let its morbid name fool you: Death Valley National Park is rich with photogenic life. After the rains, the park grows vibrant wildflowers you won’t want to miss. No matter when you visit, you can explore its striking sand dunes, which look like the setting of a “Star Wars” movie.
