Interesting Fact: The concept for the Rand McNally Auto Trails Maps series originated with John Brink, a contract cartographer and avid automobile traveler. In 1916, he proposed creating a standardized set of easy-to-use road maps for motorists. Rather than relying on lengthy trail names, Brink suggested using numbered routes paired with a clear map legend—an approach that fit more efficiently on the map and freed valuable layout space for advertising and promotional content. The idea quickly gained momentum, and Brink soon rose to lead the “Blazed Trails Department” at Rand McNally, overseeing the production of regional state road maps.
